Aging is inevitable, and for some people, the signs of getting older appear much sooner than we would like. The face is the area of the body that most quickly betrays our advancing years, with fine lines and wrinkles developing, before giving way to lost volume, sagging and deeper folds. This can be frustrating and upsetting. There are many cosmetic treatments that claim to be able to reverse the effects of aging, but all too often the results are mediocre and difficult to sustain. Fortunately, there is a more permanent solution. One of the most effective ways to embrace a younger appearance is to undergo a facelift procedure.

We are thrilled to be able to offer our patients the benefit of facelift surgery performed in the comfort of our New York and Long Island plastic surgery offices.

If you are interested in reducing sagging in the facial area, a facelift may be the best way to address the problem. For many patients, the key issues corrected by facelift surgery include sagging jowls, loose neck skin, and fat accumulation under the chin (double chin). Facelifts work in essentially the same manner, although there are some variations in facelift techniques, depending upon the specific individual facial constructions, and the intended outcome of the facelift surgery.

Dr. Funt's goal is to achieve a natural result. You do not need to fear a "wind tunnel", "pulled lips" or other unnatural looks.

Your facelift surgery will be performed at our fully accredited Woodmere, New York surgery center. You will need to stay overnight at our surgical facility and you will have a private duty nurse with you.

After a facelift, bandages may be applied to the head and neck with the purpose of maintaining the area and keeping it stationary. The bandages are usually removed a day after the procedure.

After a facelift, many patients are astonished by the lack of pain there is after surgery. For several weeks, expect some swelling around the eyes, however, as the swelling goes away, you will begin to see the surgery's progress. Bending or lifting can extend swelling and is not suggested for three weeks after surgery. Running, cycling or exercises should not resume for three weeks. Driving is permissible when the swelling goes down and does not get in the way of your vision.

What is a Facelift?

A Facelift reshapes and lifts the lower half of the face to correct excess hanging skin on the neck and the jowling that occurs due to aging and the loss of elasticity in the skin.

One of the earliest cosmetic signs of aging is changes to the mid and lower face. As we get older, our skin becomes thinner and loses elasticity. Much of the natural volume that many of us hold in our faces when we are younger is lost, and this means that our faces can begin to sag. Hollows in the cheeks can develop and a more pronounced demarcation between the nose and mouth (nasolabial folds) gives you the appearance of looking older than you really are. Specifically, the skin starts to hang in the lower face and neck which cannot be corrected with non-invasive procedures.

The goal of a Facelift procedure is to restore the youthful appearance of the cheeks by lifting the soft tissues of the mid and lower face and tightening the skin so that it appears smoother and more supportive of the facial structure.

What you can expect to happen in a Facelift?

As we know, Facelift addresses the area that extends from the cheekbones to the jawline. Our surgical team will make small incisions along your hairline and behind the ear to be able to keep the scars discreet. Special surgical instruments will then be used to lift the skin, as well as the internal inelastic layer called the SMAS to pull the face up making it tight and smooth. The surgeon then lifts both layers to secure the new and improved positioning to complete your procedure.

Once your surgery is complete, you will need to allow yourself some time to come around from the anesthetic. Your face is likely to feel tight and tender, and this is normal. Over-the-counter pain medications should be sufficient to ease any discomfort that you feel. You will be given specific advice regarding the best way to look after yourself while you heal. This will include information about caring for your wounds, wearing a support garment on your face to minimize swelling and expedite healing and when you will be able to start returning to your usual activities.

The recovery period is around two weeks and we advise our patients to relax and keep low activity while healing.

If you are unhappy with the effects that aging is having on your appearance, a Facelift at our New York and Long Island plastic surgery offices could hold the answer. Contact us to schedule a consultation to discuss your facelift with our experienced facial plastic surgeon.
